Melodic mixes, picked for your goal

Pure beats can sound clinical. MentalWave hides each beat under a soft melody and a nature bed, so it is something you actually want to listen to. Home opens on the mixes made for your goal, then shelves for sleep, overthinking, focus and healing frequencies.

  • 49 ready-made sounds and mixes
  • Rain, waves, fire, storm, a singing bowl and more
  • Every mix shows its beat: 1 Hz, 6 Hz, 40 Hz…

A player that gets out of the way

Press play and put the phone down. The Lissajous figure turns at the speed of the beat, the screen stays dark, and a sleep timer fades the sound out gently when you have drifted off.

  • Sleep timer with a gentle fade
  • Lock screen and AirPlay controls
  • Backdrop mode: plays on top of your music or podcast
Mix settings in MentalWave: beat intensity, binaural or isochronic mode, and sound layers like rain, ocean, garden and singing bowl

Make any mix your own

Turn the beat down until you barely hear it, switch from binaural to isochronic to listen without headphones, and add or remove layers. Save the result as your own mix.

  • Beat intensity: off, low, normal, high
  • Binaural (headphones) or isochronic (speakers)
  • Nature layers and melody layers

The Pad: tune a frequency with one finger

Drag across the Pad to pick a carrier tone and a beat at the same time. MentalWave names the band you are in and what it is usually used for, so you always know what you are listening to.

  • Carrier from 80 to 1000 Hz, beat from 0.5 to 40 Hz
  • Binaural, isochronic or pure tone

The five bands

What each beat is usually used for

A binaural beat is the slow pulse you perceive when each ear hears a slightly different tone. Its speed falls in one of the five brainwave bands. MentalWave labels every sound with its band.

Delta0.5–4 Hz

Deep, slow-wave sleep. Used in the sleep mixes.

Theta4–8 Hz

Drowsiness, daydreaming and meditation.

Alpha8–12 Hz

Relaxed wakefulness: calm, but awake.

Beta12–30 Hz

Active thinking and focus.

Gamma30–40 Hz

Alert attention. 40 Hz is the most studied.

The research

Built on published studies, worded with care

Every claim in the app points to a study you can read. We say “may help”, because that is what the research supports.

Sleep
A 3 Hz binaural beat played during sleep lengthened deep (N3) sleep in a small lab study.
Jirakittayakorn & Wongsawat, Frontiers in Human Neuroscience, 2018
Calm
Across studies, binaural beats were linked to lower measured anxiety and pain perception, and to an effect on attention.
Garcia-Argibay, Santed & Reales, Psychological Research, 2019 (meta-analysis)
Focus
40 Hz gamma beats helped people catch what usually slips past their attention.
Reedijk, Bolders, Colzato & Hommel, Frontiers in Psychiatry, 2015

Questions

What is MentalWave?

MentalWave is an iPhone app that plays binaural beats, isochronic tones, Solfeggio frequencies and coloured noise, usually wrapped in a soft melody and a nature bed. You pick a goal (sleep, stress, focus, migraine-prone days or tinnitus) and it suggests the mixes made for it. You can also tune your own frequency on the Pad.

Do I need headphones?

For binaural beats, yes: each ear has to hear a slightly different tone. Isochronic mixes, like Deep Work 40, and the pure noises work through speakers too. The app tells you which is which.

Do binaural beats really work?

Research is promising but still young. A 2019 meta-analysis linked binaural beats to lower anxiety and to effects on attention, and small lab studies found longer deep sleep with a 3 Hz beat. Results vary from person to person. You can read every study we cite on our research page.

Is MentalWave a medical device?

No. MentalWave is a wellness app for relaxation, sleep and focus. It does not diagnose, treat or cure any condition. If you live with insomnia, migraines or tinnitus, talk to a doctor; MentalWave can be part of a calmer evening routine, not a treatment.

Is MentalWave free?

MentalWave is free to download, with free sounds in every section, the three pure noises, three pure tones, the nature layers and timers up to 30 minutes. MentalWave Premium unlocks every mix, the full Pad, melody layers, saved mixes and unlimited listening: €49.99 per year, with a 7-day free trial, or €9.99 per month. You can cancel any time in your Apple Account settings.

Does it work offline?

Yes. Beats, tones and noise are generated live on your iPhone, and the nature and melody layers are part of the app, so nothing needs to stream. You only need a connection to subscribe or restore a purchase.

Do I need an account?

No. There is no sign-up and no email to give. Your goal, favourites and mixes stay on your iPhone, and your subscription is handled by Apple.
